The public will soon have an opportunity to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s monumental Christmas 1776 river crossing.
The event, which is held each December for thousands of onlookers, will take place Sunday, December 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the actual crossing occurring at 1 p.m. at the Washington Crossing Historic Park. In addition to the crossing, special colonial-era activities and demonstrations will be held throughout the historic village. The cost to attend the event is $8 for adults, $4 for children aged five to 11, and free for children under the age of 5. Proceeds from the reenactment support future programming at the park.
During the event, several hundred reenactors in Continental military dress listen to an inspiring speech by General Washington and then row across the river in replica Durham boats.
According to officials, river crossings are contingent upon safe conditions for participants; however other events will still take place.
The park is also scheduled to host a Christmas Day crossing event, a free event which will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on December 25.
