A new coffee shop had its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday morning in Newtown Borough.
Margaret and Raj Kumar signed the lease for 15 South State Street last January. Since then, they have been working to transform the space formerly occupied by the Tobacco Leaf into a warm and welcoming coffee house.
The Coffee Room is the culmination of about two years of planning and dreaming, according to the owners.
“We love coffee and we just found the culture,” said Margaret Kumar.
A big reason the duo landed on South State Street in Newtown is the fact that the two are residents of Newtown Township and wanted to keep the business close by. They looked at other towns, but decided that anywhere else, the coffee shop would just be a business.
“It was such a long road that it is nice to see the staff here working and our plan come to fruition,” Margaret said.
It was really important to the Kumars for the actual space to be well maintained and a pleasant for customers.
“It’s overwhelming and exciting how much people have expressed gratitude for what we’re doing,” Raj said.
The new shop provides stiff competition for the Starbucks nearby, but the Kumars feel their is enough of a thirst for their drinks in town.
“It’s a wonderful thing and the fact that it is locally owned and operated is just another reason that Newtown is so great,” said Charles Swartz, mayor of Newtown Borough.
With more and more small businesses coming to State Street, Swartz stated that they can work together to stay afloat in the presence of some of the national chains in the area.
