Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick released a statement Friday on the previous night’s targeted military attack on Syria.

Below is Fitzpatrick’s statement:

“Our nation’s response to Syria was both measured in its scope and relevant in its target. We must unite as a nation against egregious violations of human rights and not sit idly by while a brutal dictator takes the lives of innocent citizens, including children, through the use of banned chemical weapons. Moving forward, the administration must work with Congress and outline clear policy goals for Syria and the larger fight against terrorism in the region.”

On Thursday night, two U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers fired a combined total of 59 Tomahawk missiles at Syria’s Shayrat Air Force Base at the direction of President Donald Trump. The base was determined, according to press reports, to be the connected to a deadly chemical attack on civilians in Syria.

Pentagon Spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said in statement that the attack targeted aircraft, hardened aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage, ammunition supply bunkers, air defense systems, and radars. He added that the military worked to avoid civilian casualties.

Fitzpatrick, a former FBI special agent who served in Iraq, serves on both the Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security Committees in the House of Representatives.
