Student Journalists Win Press Awards

The Centurion, Bucks County Community College’s student-run newspaper, has earned 10 Student Keystone Press Awards from the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation. That brings the total awards that the newspaper has won in the two-year college division of the statewide contest to 84 since it began entering in 2010.

Professor Tony Rogers, coordinator of the journalism program at Bucks, says the consistent performance by student journalists year after year is a reflection of the quality of the academic program at the public, two-year college.

“I think it shows that even at a community college paper, where staff turnover is a constant, you can still produce really good journalism,” said Rogers. “The fact that the Centurion has won so many awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the paper’s editors and reporters, year in and year out.”

The Centurion won the following awards, which were presented at the America East Media Business and Technology Conference in Hershey, Pa., on Wednesday, April 12:

• Website: First place – Centurion staff.

• Public Service/Enterprise Package:  First place – “Different Relationships in a Different Age” by Lauren Savana, Diamond Schuler, Angela Grabosky, Crystal Stout and George Means.

• Public Service/Enterprise Package: Second place – “Racism and Prejudice in the Land of the Free,” by Lauren Savana, Jahmeelah Wilson, Carly Pendergast, Chad Dingman, Crystal Stout and Diamond Schuler.

• General News: Second place – “Missing Woman’s Body Found” by Shannon Harrar.

• General News: Honorable mention – “On Campus Protests Turn Violent” by Shannon Harrar and Hal Conte

• Ongoing News Coverage: Second place – “Decision 2016” by Shannon Harrar, Hal Conte, Nash Anderson, and Erin McVan

• Personality Profile: Honorable mention – “A Hip-Hop Marvel” by George Means

• Sports Story: Honorable mention – “Golf Team Looks to Improve” by Nash Anderson.

• Cartoon/Graphic Illustration: Honorable mention – “America through a Danish student’s eyes” by Karoline Lunddal Dam, a visiting student from Denmark.
