The skies above the East Coast were filled with several colorful dots early Thursday morning.

The blue-green artificial clouds were high above the southern sky in the ionosphere around 4:30 a.m. following a test of NASA’s new multi-canister ejection system for deploying vapors to track particles in the atmosphere.

The rocket that launched the 10 canisters early Thursday morning was launched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on the coast of Virginia. The artificial clouds were visible from New York to North Carolina.

According to NASA officials, Thursday’s launch came after 10 previous attempts that were cancelled due to clouds, wind and boats in the launch area.
