A 33-year-old man was killed when the dump truck he was driving crashed late Monday morning in Newtown Township.

Zafer Akar was behind the wheel of the tri-axle dump truck that was loaded with gravel when it crashed around 11:05 a.m. Monday, police said.

The truck was traveling south on Swamp Road just past Twinning Bridge Road when it left the road, struck a utility pole, and overturned, spilling part of its load, police said.

The investigation remained active as of Wednesday, police said.

The pole being damaged caused a power outage that PECO had to repair.

Swamp Road was closed in the area of the crash until 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Near the scene Monday afternoon, two men cried as they talked on their phone. A passerby comforted one of the men, who appeared to know Akar.

Police said they were assisted by the Newtown Township Fire Department, Northampton Township Fire Police, Newtown Ambulance Squad, Bucks County Corner’s Office, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Rangers, and Bucks County Community College Security.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is being asked to contact police via the “Submit a Tip” link on CrimeWatch or call 215-579-1000 and investigators will contact you as soon as possible.
