The Newtown Borough community is set to welcome the holiday season this weekend.
The borough will host its annual Christmas tree lighting on Friday. The event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the tree lighting at approximately 7 p.m.
A highlight of the evening will be the tree lighting by Santa Claus, who will make a grand entrance in an antique firetruck. Outgoing Newtown Borough Council President Tara Grunde-McLaughlin and local resident Peter Brill will assist Santa in lighting the tree, marking the official start of the holiday season in Newtown Borough.
The ceremony will take place in the Newtown Fire Association’s parking lot at the corner of Washington Avenue and Liberty Street.
The event is sponsored by the Newtown Experience and will feature performances by the Goodnoe Elementary School Choir, the Council Rock North Choir, and BC Discoveries Dance and Theater Arts Company. Adding to the holiday atmosphere, a DJ will entertain the attendees throughout the evening.
In addition to the musical and dance performances, participants can enjoy hot chocolate provided by Starbucks and cookies provided by the Newtown Hardware House.

On Sunday, the Newtown Business Association (NBA) and McCaffrey’s Market are set to host the Newtown Holiday Parade starting at 2 p.m. at the Stocking Works building on South State Street.
Participants will march on State Street, before turning onto Washington Street, then onto Sycamore Street, and end at Durham Road.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to arrive early to secure prime viewing spots along the route.
Newtown Borough police advised that parking will be limited in the area.
