The Newtown Borough Police Department recently alerting residents about Pennsylvania’s laws regarding e-bikes after an increase in complaints about juveniles operating them carelessly.

The department issued a statement to “ensure your safety and the safety of others on our roads.”

In Pennsylvania, e-bikes are considered vehicles and are subject to specific rules.

The police department highlighted several key points for residents and parents to be aware of when it comes to e-bikes.

PennDOT said a person must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike and wearing a helmet is mandatory for riders under 12, but the department “strongly recommend(s) that all riders wear helmets to ensure their safety.”

E-bikes are limited to a maximum speed of 20 mph on roads and bike paths, and e-bike riders are permitted on roads and bike paths but must follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles.

A driver’s license is not required to operate an e-bike, but riders must follow all traffic laws and regulations.

“Before you purchase an e-bike please see the age in which a juvenile can legally ride the bike,” the department said in its message to parents.

The department reminded residents to “always follow the rules of the road, be aware of your surroundings, and ride defensively.”
