Local and state police are increasing patrols for the holiday weekend to combat intoxicated driving.
The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office announced that municipal police will be on the roads over the Labor Day weekend to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
“Our goal is to make sure every family in Bucks County can celebrate and get home safely,” District Attorney Jennifer Schorn said. “Our officers will be on patrol around the clock with zero tolerance.”
Schorn warned that driving under the influence of drugs is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated by alcohol.
Pennsylvania State Police Troop M, which covers Bucks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties, began its holiday enforcement period Friday. The patrols will continue through 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
The state police effort includes the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program (P.A.D.E.E.P.), which targets aggressive drivers and those with speeding, seat belt, and child seat belt violations.
Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Drivers (S.T.E.A.D.D.) and Drug Recognition Expert (D.R.E.) troopers will focus on apprehending motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on roadways.
During last year’s Labor Day holiday, Troop M investigated 36 crashes and made 20 DUI arrests in its patrol area.
On the Pennsylvania Turnpike, troopers will have additional patrols to enforce speed limits and proper following distances.
“If you plan on celebrating, plan on a safe and sober right home,” Schorn said.
