Every Friday for the past few months, a group of dedicated Newtown-area business people met inside Action Karate on Penns Trail. The dedicated local business people, including staff from NewtownPANow.com, were working to plan for the Newtown Business Association’s Welcome Day, which is described as a “street fair with flair.”

All their hard work will pay off this Sunday when when more than 12,000 people are expected to fill Sycamore Street between Washington Avenue and Durham Road from 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“It’s the biggest event in the county that has the most entertainment and activities for families,” Newtown Business Association President Beverly Dimler of Penns Trail Storage said.

Welcome Day will feature 240 vendors, including food trucks, activities for kids, artisan crafters and booths for area businesses and nonprofits. More than 42 musical and entertainment will be among the focal points of the street festival.

“I know people are a little concerned with the weather but the street will still be closed all day. From the weather reports, I’m reading it sounds like the weather will hold off until later in the afternoon,” she said. “This is a rain and shine event, so bring an umbrella or hoodie if it does rain.”

Dimler, who is in her first year as president of the NBA, said a record number of vendors and performers will be taking to Sycamore Street for Welcome Day.

An Apple Watch is among the prizes for this year’s Passport Challenge. Visitors will have to get special passports (included below) marked off at various vendors to be entered in the contest.

A popular attraction is the Rising Star Competition that will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Bill Marsh Ford. Dimler said both children and adults are lined up to show off their talents before a panel of judges for various prizes.

“Also, we are going to be collecting nonperishable items at the NBA booth,” she said, adding the donations will go to help Bucks County food banks.

The Newtown Business Association president said Welcome Day is a way for the community to enjoy themselves and also for area businesses to encourage people to shop local.
