A Newtown woman was killed when her SUV was struck by a dump truck.

The crash happened at Route 539 and Longswamp Road in Plumsted Township in Ocean County, New Jersey, around 10:50 a.m. Monday. The story was first reported by Newtown Patch.

Nancy Harris, 79, of Newtown, was pronounced dead at the scene along with her passenger, Helen Conover, 84, of Hamilton, New Jersey, police said.

The 58-year-old Ocean County man driving the 2017 Mack dump truck that struck Harris’ SUV was transported to a nearby hospital with minor back pain, police said.

According to investigators from Plumsted police and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the dump truck filled with 20 tons of sand hit Harris’ Lexus SUV after she made a left in front of the large vehicle. The driver’s side of the SUV was smashed by the dump truck.

Police described the damage to the SUV was “extensive.”
