Newtown Borough Council voted Tuesday evening to swear in a new council member to fill a vacancy.

Kris Bauman was voted by council to fill the First Ward seat opened when Council Member Amy Lustig resigned last month.

Council President Tara Grunde-McLaughlin welcomed Bauman to the borough’s governing body and noted he has been attending recent public meetings.

Bauman will serve the remaining six months of Lustig’s term. He said he plans to run for a council seat in the November election.

District Judge Mick Petrucci swore Bauman into office.

At the June 7 work session, Bauman, Paul Salvatore, and Gregg Taylor stepped forward and applied for the vacant position.

“I simply want to be a good steward for the borough,” Bauman said.

The new council member said during his interview that he appreciated Newtown Borough’s “walkability” and felt it was an important asset for the small town.

Salvatore is recently retired and has a long history of volunteering in the borough, including with borough committees.

Taylor grew up in Newtown Borough and returned after living around the country. He said that experience allowed him to realize the beauty of his hometown.
