Republican Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick is calling for President Barack Obama to urge China to take a tougher stance after North Korea tested a nuclear warhead Thursday.

The statement from Fitzpatrick:

“The latest nuclear test by North Korea represents a continuation of Kim Jong-un’s hostile and confrontational stance that aims to destabilize the region. This however is not a new occurrence. For the past seventy years, the Kim regime has sown tension abroad and totalitarian dictatorship within its own borders. I agree with House Speaker Paul Ryan that President Obama should immediately make full use of the sanction authority Congress granted him this year. On the international stage, the President should urge North Korea’s closest ally China to take a tougher stance with Pyongyang and its provocative actions. We cannot allow the continued proliferation and testing of nuclear weapons by rogue states to undermine our country’s national security.”

According to NBC News, the explosion “produced the North’s biggest estimated explosive yield to date: 10 kilotons, compared with the previous test’s estimated 6 kiloton yield.”

The test is the second this year by communist North Korea.
