The Girl Scout cookies craze hit Newtown this weekend as 13 troops took to the Rothman Institute’s parking lot on South Eagle Road to create a first for the community – a drive-thru Girl Scout cookie booth.

On Saturday and Sunday, the troops hope to sell a total of 1,600 boxes of cookies. A few hours into the sale on Saturday, the group sold about 350 boxes to patrons at their “Super Booth.”

According to Elizabeth Wolcott, the service unit cookie manager for the area, Super Bowl Sunday is a major day for  Girl Scout cookie sales, which is why the organization picked this weekend for the sale.

The sale consisted of 13 troops from six schools in the Newtown area: Newtown Elementary, Goodnoe Elementary, Sol Feinstone Elementary, St. Andrew’s Catholic Education Center, Newtown Middle School and Council Rock North High School. Aside from St. Andrew’s, each school is in the Council Rock School District.

This is the first time the troops have come together for the Super Booth, but troop leaders noted that they are excited to see it grow in the future. The collaboration lets girls from different troops and schools interact and work together to serve a common goal.

The money raised from the booth will be divided among the 13 troops. Some troops use the money to help with dues involved with being in the scouts, and others use the money for camping or girls’ uniforms.

“We thought it was a great idea. We definitely wanted to get involved,” explained Suzanne Steele, from Sol Feinstone troop.
