McGovern was allegedly stabbed in the torso by Steven E. Simminger, 40, Media, Delaware County. The stabbing reportedly happened after a argument over the New Jersey Devil’s logo on a hat. Several friends were with McGovern at the time.

“I just tried to help him keep breathing and talked to him a little bit,” witness Megan Hellander told the 6abc.com. “I just said, ‘the ambulance is coming, they’re coming to help you.'”

McGovern was rushed Hahnemann University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

While the suspect did flee the stabbing when it happened around 3 a.m., he was taken into custody by late Sunday night.

McGovern played football for the Council Rock High School South Golden Hawks football team in the 2008-2009 school year.

McGovern’s Facebook page was filled tributes from friends. The messages began pouring in Sunday.
