A year after being purchased by several local business people, Ned’s Cigar Store on State Street in Newtown Borough continues to be a local staple.
Kim Carney, manager of Ned’s, said the cigar shop has a wide and diverse customer base, some who travel from as far away as Princeton.
“Customers love the vibe of the place,” said Carney.
The shop was bought by seven investors after owner Luca Foglia, a popular member of the State Street business community, unexpectedly and suddenly passed in October 2014.
Ned’s offers an array of cigars for both men and women. Carney said boutique and high-quality cigars are among the offerings at the store.
A beer meister is available for customers. The shop also features lockers where members can keep spirits of their choice, usually Scotch and Bourbon, to sip on while enjoying their cigars. A DVD player is also available for customers. Carney said members are now able to enter the lounge off hours via use of a keypad.
Cigars aren’t just for men anymore.
Alex, a local mom who has been coming to Ned’s for 20 years, says she comes in the business for about 30 minutes several times a week to relax and grab a cigar – her favorite, an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story. As her son is now 18 years old, Alex brings him into the store on occasion to enjoy a cigar with her. It’s a bonding time for the two to talk about their day.
Carney said business at Ned’s has remained steady over the past year and customers said they have been pleased with the changes.
Ned’s was started when Edward “Ned” Maher opened the shop in 1940. Unfortunately, Maher died on Anzio Beachhead in Italy during World War II and the shop has gone through several owners over the decades.
Despite the years and changes in ownership, the shop retains its classic charm and remains popular with customers.
