Newtown Borough Council has joined the roughly a dozen towns in Pennsylvania and New Jersey that have voiced their opposition to a proposed hazardous waste water treatment facility.
The council on Wednesday evening voted to approve a resolution that officially marks the borough’s opposition to the proposed Elcon in Falls Township. The resolution was discussed at a July meeting and has received some minor tweaks between then and the first meeting.
Elcon plans to build a 22-acre treatment facility at a 33-acre site at 100 Dean Sievers Place in the Keystone Industrial Port Complex in Falls. The company is expected to submit Phase II plans to state officials for review sometime this year.
The council’s resolution against the facility is similar to ones passed by other towns in Bucks County.
In June, Bucks County residents Betty Tatham and Patricia McCarron, both of Northampton, came before the borough council and raised their concerns about the Elcon facility. Their main concerns stem from the hazardous wastewater treatment facility being constructed within a mile of the Delaware River. The river supplies drinking water to many towns in Bucks County.
Bristol Borough, Middletown, Morrisville, Newtown Township, Tullytown, Upper Makefield and Yardley are among the Bucks County towns that have passed resolutions that oppose the proposed facility.
