State Rep. Kristin Marcell officially resigned from the Council Rock School Board last week, more than a month after she took state office.
Marcell is a Wrightstown Republican who was elected to the school board in 2019.
After being elected to state office last November, Marcell continued to serve on the school board, which is permitted but raised some eyebrows.
In January, Marcell told the public resigning from the school board was the “best decision for my family” and would fulfill a promise to her husband.
Marcell had said she would step down on February 16. Later, she changed her resignation date to last Thursday so that it wouldn’t miss the deadline for applicants to run this year in the primary for her Region 9 seat.
Some Council Rock School District residents expressed concern over Marcell’s decision to serve on the school board and as a state representative. At the January 19 meeting, several people spoke about Marcell’s decision to stay on the school board and the date she decided to resign.
Marcell as a state official represents the 178th Legislative District, which covers Northampton Township, Warwick Township, Wrightstown Township, and Upper Southampton Township.
Republican Wendi Thomas, Marcell’s immediate predecessor as state representative for the 178th Legislative District, also served on the Council Rock School Board, but she resigned from that position the spring she began her campaign, months before being elected.
The school board voted to approve Marcell’s resignation last week. The board will have 30 days to fill the vacancy.
Those interested in filling Marcell’s vacancy can submit a resume and letter of interest to Dr. Andrew Sanko’s office no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday. The letters can be emailed to asanko@crsd.org or mailed to the Council Rock School District, 30 North Chancellor Street, Newtown, PA 18940.
“The letter must be signed and confirm that the candidate resides in Region 9, and has been a resident of the school district for at least one year; the candidate is 18 years old or older; and is a qualified elector,” according to a notice from the school district.
Interviews of potential candidates will be held on Tuesday, February 28.
The school board will vote to appoint a residents to fill the seat in early March.
