A garage was destroyed by flames in Upper Makefield Township Thursday afternoon.

Fire crews were dispatched to a home in the 200 block of Thompson Mill Road around 1:15 p.m. for a detached garage that was ablaze.

The fire was reported to be called in by a family member of the homeowner.

The first arriving crews reported heavy flames shooting from the garage.

The Lingohocken Fire Company posted on social media that crews were on the scene for roughly three hours.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.

Fire Marshal John Kernan said there were a number of gases and chemicals reported to be in the well-involved garage. Due to that, a decision was made to have firefighter back off for safety.

As Upper Makefield Township has few fire hydrants, tanker trucks shuttled water to the scene so crews could douse the flames.

Kernan said the detached garage was a total loss and the car inside was destroyed.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Thursday evening.

“Due to the contents of garage, we secured it and will be returning to investigate. It is too dangerous to process at this time. We need to let it cool off and stabilize,” he said.

In addition to the Lingohocken Fire Company, the Midway, Northampton, and Upper Makefield fire companies, along with Newtown Fire Rescue, responded to the scene. The Southampton and Warwick fire companies covered nearby stations while crews were at the scene.
