Residents across Bucks County and parts of New Jersey noticed a brief flickering of their lights Monday evening, and the issue has been determined to be caused by a problem in New Jersey.
According to a reporter’s observation, reader reports, and internet postings, the issue happened around 8:30 p.m. at homes and businesses in the region.
An informal survey by a reporter found residents in Bristol Township, Falls Township, Doylestown Borough, Newtown Township, Solebury Township, Upper Southampton Township, and Northeast Philadelphia all reported the series of short but noticeable flickers. On Reddit, there were further reports of the incident across Bucks County and New Jersey, including in Bergen County, Cape May County, Hunterdon County, and Mercer County.
A PECO spokesperson spent time earlier this week looking into the incident, which did not cause any known power outages in the area.
Brian Ahrens, the PECO spokesperson, said the issue was discovered to have originated in New Jersey and spread throughout PECO’s coverage area.
The spokesperson for New Jersey energy company PSE&G, Rebecca Mazzarella, said the problem was reported in Pennsylvania and New Jersey because the states are part of a regional power grid.
The flickering was caused by a problem at a New Jersey substation which remains under investigation by the company, Mazzarella said.
Like in Pennsylvania, the problem did not cause any power outages in New Jersey, Mazzarella noted.
