The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said on Monday that the granulated sugar sent to the Bucks County Prothonotary’s Office last Monday was “not criminal in nature.”

The district attorney’s office said the substance arriving in the envelop at the Justice Center in Doylestown Borough was an “inadvertent accident.”

The incident transpired shortly before 4 p.m. when an employee at the prothonotary’s office found the white substance while sorting through incoming mail.

The quick response, including the evacuation of the office and the closure of adjacent offices, was driven by precautionary vigilance by Prothonotary Coleen Christian.

Further details reveal that the envelope contained granulated sugar and nothing harmful.

James O’Malley, a spokesperson for the county government, confirmed the substance’s benign nature, stating that it was granulated sugar. The substance was confirmed by testing from the Bucks County Hazmat Team.

Christian told this news organization that the envelop had a court filing, a check addressed to the county, and the sender’s return address on it.

Christian, whose office is tasked with overseeing the docketing, scanning, and processing of civil and family court documents, expressed relief that the substance posed no harm last week.

The Bucks County Detectives were assigned to probe the incident.

The incident came a little more than a year after a suspicious substance was mailed to the Bucks County Board of Elections office.
