Bucks County will mark National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday by providing residents with numerous sites to safely dispose of unused or expired medications.
The Bucks County Drug and Alcohol Commission is spearheading the initiative, teaming up with local law enforcement and community coalitions.
According to the commission, there will be 47 collection sites operating across the county from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The drop-off locations are not limited to prescription drugs and they will also accept over-the-counter drugs, pet medications, vitamins, vaping devices, and other related items.
Thirty sites will additionally collect sharps, including needles.
Several locations will offer Narcan, a life-saving medication used to block the effects of opioids, especially in overdose cases, available while supplies last.
Below are the drop-off locations in the Newtown area:
• Newtown Fire Association, 14 Liberty Street, Newtown Borough (Sharps collection included)
• Newtown Township Municipal Building, 100 Municipal Drive, Newtown (Sharps collection included)
• Upper Makefield Police Department, 1076 Eagle Road, Upper Makefield (Sharps collection included)
The commission emphasized the importance of safely handling medications—storing them correctly, using only as directed, and ensuring they are securely kept.
“This is one of the most highly successful projects in Bucks County and statewide,” Bucks County Drug and Alcohol Commission Executive Director Diane Rosati said.
“This is a collaborative project,” Rosati added, thanking all those who put it together.
Since 2010, more than 211,000 pounds of unused or unwanted medications were collected.
The commission stresses the importance of proper medication handling, emphasizing correct storage, adherence to prescribed use, and secure keeping to prevent misuse. Data from the 2021 Pennsylvania Youth Survey revealed that half of the county’s students who misused prescription drugs had accessed them from a family member at home.
