Newtown Borough police were kept busy throughout the hot and humid month of July.

The borough’s police force responded to 203 calls for service, police Chief James Sabath said during this week’s council meeting.

Officers utilized grant funding to support an aggressive driver detail, resulting in 101 traffic stops. The heightened enforcement was part of an effort to curb reckless driving in the borough, the chief said.

One of the more serious incidents involved a head-on collision on Penn Street after a woman fell asleep at the wheel and struck an oncoming vehicle, Sabath said.

In another incident, a 38-year-old Newtown woman struck the Centre Avenue bridge over Newtown Creek and caused damage to the structure. PennDOT and borough officials are working to repair the bridge, Sabath reported.

The police department also investigated several fraud cases last month. In one case, a resident was scammed out of $800 and their bank was able to stop a $43,000 wire transfer before it was sent to a scammer, Sabath said.

Officers were also called to State Street for kids were reported throwing objects from a business onto people below. The juveniles involved were referred to the youth aid panel, Sabath said.

Additionally, the chief addressed concerns about public alcohol consumption outside restaurants and bars.

“We’ve noticed that is getting a little bit out of hand,” Sabath said.
