Newtown Township has finalized a fire services agreement with Newtown Borough for 2025.

The borough will pay the township approximately $192,000 for fire services, the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors announced last week.

The new contract stipulates that 10 percent of capital expenses will be paid by the borough.

Newtown Borough Council last week approved the one-year extension of the fire services agreement with Newtown Township.

“We have completed the fire services agreement with the borough for 2025 for approximately $192,000,” Supervisor Vice Chairperson Elen Snyder said. “That includes an increase of under 5 percent and 10 percent of capital expenses are paid by the borough.”

Borough Council President Emily Heinz noted that the extension was a mutual decision between the borough and the township.

The borough plans to have a “much bigger discussion” on the agreement for 2026, borough officials said.

Newtown Borough and Newtown Township have worked together on fire protection services for many years.

In the late 1990s, the township started hiring career firefighters to augment the Newtown Fire Association’s volunteers and respond to calls in the borough and township during the daytime.

In recent years, that paid service has expanded, moved to seven days per week, and is titled Newtown Fire Rescue.

A state study in 2021 found the majority of Newtown Fire Rescue’s calls are in the township, which is larger in size and population.
