A two-vehicle collision on resulted in one fatality and serious injuries to a local man late Sunday evening.

Pennsylvania State Police were called to I-295 eastbound near the Route 1 interchange at approximately 8:52 p.m. At the scene, troopers discovered a 2020 Volkswagen Jetta and a 2007 Toyota Corolla heavily damaged.

The damaged Toyota, which was found on the highway’s shoulder, was driven by 34-year-old Samantha Cote of High Bridge, New Jersey, state police said.

Cote was pronounced dead after being transported to St. Mary Medical Center by the Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad, state police said.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 25-year-old man from Upper Makefield Township, suffered severe injuries and was also rushed to St. Mary Medical Center by the Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad, according to troopers.

The investigation found the crash happened when Cote’s Toyota lost control while entering I-295 eastbound from Route 1. The vehicle reportedly skidded on a patch of ice, veered across several traffic lanes, struck a guide rail, and then spun out of control. The Volkswagen then was struck by the Toyota, state police said.

Troopers noted that the airbags in Cote’s Toyota did not deploy, and she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Toyota sustained major front-end damage, state police said.

Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company Chief Frank Farry said crews responded to the scene for reports that a driver was trapped. However, no extrication was needed.

Firefighters provided lighting at the scene for three hours, Farry said.

The Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company was assisted at the scene by the Parkland, Penndel, and William Penn fire companies.
