The search in Newtown and Northampton townships involved dozens of responders and concluded with the discovery of his body.

State police and the Bucks County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death, which appears to be an accident.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Rena, and their two sons, 8-year-old Calder and 5-year-old Miles.

A GoFundMe campaign to support Campbell’s family raised more than $30,000 as of Monday night. It has the goal of starting college funds and savings accounts for his sons.

Haley Richter, who organized the online fundraiser, described Campbell as “a bright and energetic light to all” and “a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend to his family and community.”

“Alec was and is beloved and we are humbled by and grateful for the outpouring of love and support,” Campbell’s family said in a statement released to NBC 10.

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn expressed profound sadness after Campbell’s death.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Alec Campbell, a dedicated member of our Pennsylvania state park staff,” Dunn said in a statement. “Every day, state park employees play a vital role in welcoming visitors, protecting our natural spaces, and ensuring the safety of all who enjoy Pennsylvania’s beautiful parks. Alec’s commitment and passion touched many lives, and his loss is felt deeply across our entire community.”

Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered flags in Pennsylvania to fly at half-staff on Tuesday in memory of Campbell.

“Lori and I are praying for the family and friends of Alec Campbell,” the governor said in a statement. “As I told his wife Rena, we are eternally grateful for Alec’s service to his Commonwealth. May his memory be a blessing.”

Ryan Andrew Chudd, a close friend, remembered Campbell in a Facebook post as “a tremendous outdoorsman, smart, clever, kind, and radiant.”

“Alec worked as a Park Resource Ranger at Tyler. He also enjoyed disc golf. During the pandemic, Alec and I played many courses together, including Tyler. He was a tremendous outdoorsman, smart, clever, kind, and radiant. He’d be bummed that the park was closed this weekend while they search for him. So please, enjoy the outdoors where you can with your friends and family,” Chudd said in a post in the Bucks County Disc Golf Alliance Discussions Facebook group.

As a park resource ranger, Campbell assisted park visitors, delivered presentations, directed visitors, inspected facilities, and contributed to park management and safety.

Tyler State Park, which had been closed since Friday afternoon during the search, is scheduled to reopen Tuesday morning.
