Bucks Countians were treated to a cool view Tuesday as June’s full moon, which is known as the “Strawberry Moon,” illuminated the sky.
From moonrise into the nighttime hours, the moon had a striking yellow-orange hue. Some clouds moved across the moon at times.
The Strawberry Moon was named by the Algonquian people for the berry harvesting season that occurs late each spring.
The moon’s warm, golden color was a result of Earth’s atmosphere scattering shorter, blue wavelengths of the sun’s reflected light. That allowed the longer, redder wavelengths to reach our eyes, according to Space.com.
Adding to the spectral, the moon appears larger at moonrise against the horizon, an effect attributed to the “moon illusion.”
