Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant abruptly closed all of its locations across five states Thursday and cited “ongoing financial challenges.”
The chain, which includes a location in Newtown Township, announced the closings in a social media post.
The Newtown Township location in the Village at Newtown on Eagle Road was open for business on Wednesday, and there were no signs it was slated to close.
“After many wonderful years serving our communities, all Iron Hill locations have closed,” the company said in a statement. “It has been our pleasure to serve you, and we are deeply grateful for your support, friendship and loyalty over the years.”
An employee at the Newtown Township location told NewtownPANow.com that they learned the news from a text message from a co-worker Thursday morning.
An internal company email shared with this news organization stated the closure was due to a decision to file for bankruptcy.
“Due to ongoing financial challenges, the company has made the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy and, regrettably, will be permanently closing its doors,” Iron Hill management wrote to employees.
Management told employees they will process their final payroll Thursday and expressed “deepest gratitude” for their contributions and dedication, while apologizing for the short notice.
Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant management told staff it had been working to secure new funding sources and exploring solutions to avoid the closure.
The company had previously spoken of plans to grow the chain in southern states, but it had recently shuttered several locations. Iron Hill closed three locations in recent weeks in Chestnut Hill; Voorhees, New Jersey; and its flagship location in Newark, Delaware, shortly before the mass closure. Last year, the chain closed its Phoenixville and Ardmore locations.
Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant opened in Newtown Township in June 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Home brewers Kevin Finn and Mark Edelson and restaurateur Kevin Davies started Iron Hill in 1996.
Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant operated nearly 20 locations in Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
“We sincerely hope to return in the future, and when we do, we promise to welcome you with open arms,” the company said in its public announcement.
