A former Navy admiral and the mayor of a tough western Pennsylvania town couldn’t defeat a woman born and raised in northeast Philadelphia.
Katie McGinty, former chief of staff for Gov. Tom Wolf and a Bill Clinton advisor, beat out former Admiral Joe Sestak and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. Candidate Joseph J. Vodvarka was in a distance fourth place as of late Tuesday night.
McGinty will face off against incumbent Republican Pat Toomey in the general election.
Sestak, who also served in the congress, walked across the state as part of his campaign and Fetterman played up his work in the blue collar town of Braddock, which is a short distance from Pittsburgh.
