Newtown Township’s Board of Supervisors have unanimously approved a resolution opposing the proposed hazardous waste treatment facility proposed by for Falls Township.

The Newtown board voted forward the resolution on Wednesday. The vote comes less than a month after the Clean Air and Water Council (CAWC) and Bucks County residents spoke before the board to urge them to oppose the Elcon waste treatment facility proposed for a site about a mile away from the Delaware River, which provides drinking water for millions of people.

Supervisor Ryan Gallagher said before the vote that there are “serious health, safety and welfare concerns regarding dangerous chemicals that could go into the water.”

Patricia McCarron of CAWC spoke out to thank the board for passing the resolution. She noted her concern of the Elcon facility was for the entire region.

“As this is a very important issue to protect our Delaware Valley. It’s not just a Falls Township or Newtown issue,” McCarron said.

Other towns, including Morrisville and Tullytown, have voted forward letters and/or resolutions opposing construction of the facility at the Keystone Port Complex.
