After abandoning plans for a restaurant in Newtown Township, the family behind the famous DeLorenzo’s Tomato Pies will build their new eatery in Lower Makefield.

The Lower Makefield Board of Supervisors gave approval for the DeLorenzo’s Tomato Pies restaurant, a few small storefronts and two apartments inside a soon-to-be constructed building at the corner of Yardley-Langhorne and Edgewood roads.

The Amico family, whom are behind the current Robbinsville, New Jersey location and ran the now-closed Trenton hot spot, will run the new location.

There was some concern by residents about the mixed-used development being placed in the historic Edgewood Village section of Lower Makefield.

A Langhorne resident spoke highly of the business and said the township was lucky to have DeLorenzo’s moving in.

“Shame on Newtown if they lost out,” the Langhorne man told the Lower Makefield board.

The Amico’s abandoned plans for a 110-seat restaurant on Newtown-Yardley Road in Newtown Township in 2014 after an “uphill battle,” according to a NJ.com article.

DeLorenzo’s is known throughout the Philadelphia region for their iconic Tomato Pies and other offerings. The flagship location at 530 Hudson Street in the Chambersburg section of Trenton closed in 2012 after 66 years serving customers.

The secret to the restaurant’s famous tomato pie is the fact that the sauce is put on last after cheese is added on the dough and seasoning placed on the pie.
