Local authorities, including Newtown Borough Police and the Newtown Fire Rescue, were dispatched to the the area of Newtown Borough Hall Sunday after receiving reports of an oil spill.

Upon arrival, authorities was quickly determined that the spill was from a storage container located on the property of the Brick Hotel, according to a statement from borough police.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and local emergency management also responded to the scene.

Firefighters contained the spill, and Copperhead Custom, an environmental service company, was brought in to clean up the site.

However, on Monday, it was discovered that the municipal parking lot of Newtown Borough Hall required further cleaning.

Copperhead Custom was called out for the second time to perform the necessary cleanup.

As a result, the municipal parking lot will remain closed until further notice, Newtown Borough police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the spill, but initial findings suggest that it was an attempted theft of used cooking oil.

“There are no dangers to the public from the spill,” police said.

Precautions have been taken to prevent the spill from entering the waterway, police said.

Residents and visitors to the area have been advised to use caution when walking near Newtown Borough Hall in the coming days, authorities said.
