Steeped in history and hailed as the nation’s oldest continually operating theater, the iconic Newtown Theatre has received a boost with state funds earmarked for renovations
State Sen. Steve Santarsiero, a Democrat, recently announced the significant boost for the ongoing renovations of the historic 235-seat theater in Newtown Borough.
During the theater’s “Reel” Garden Party last week, the state senator revealed that $100,000 in state funds to support the theater’s restoration efforts. He presented a large ceremonial check.
The funds will specifically be utilized for the second phase of renovations, which will focus on upgrading the balcony and restrooms.
In addition to the state funding, private donations will also play a crucial role in the project.
The comprehensive renovation plan includes replacing the floors and seats, demolishing and rebuilding the projection room, as well as making the restrooms ADA compatible.
Santarsiero emphasized the significance of this renovations. He recounted his time working at a theater in his hometown as a teenager and the disappointment he felt upon returning to find it demolished after years of neglect.
Acknowledging the dedication of numerous volunteers, such as Dave Callahan, Andy Smith, Heather Lewis, and others, Santarsiero expressed gratitude for their tireless efforts in preserving Newtown’s historical gem.
“The Newtown Theatre is undeniably a jewel of Bucks County’s cultural heritage, and these renovations will guarantee the theater’s viability for generations,” he said.
The first phase of renovations took place throughout the spring and summer of 2021, focusing on the theater’s first floor.
After completion of the first phase, the Newtown Theatre reopened its doors to the public in December 2021.
With a rich history dating back to 1831 as “Newtown Hall,” the theater on State Street screens films, hosts a variety of live performances, including musical shows, plays, and comedy events.
