UPDATED: 6:44 p.m., Monday:

Bucks County Coroner Meredith Buck confirmed Monday evening the name of the man who was shot dead by police.

The man was identified as Mark Chambers, 40, of Northampton Township.

The coroner’s office released the following additional details:

“When the police responded to the scene, they were reportedly met by a male wielding a large knife coming towards them. The initial 911 call was requesting police intervention for the man attempting to take his own life with said knife. The man was transported to St. Mary Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:06 p.m. … After an autopsy today, Coroner Buck reported his cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and determined the manner of death as homicide.”

“It is important to note that homicide as a manner of death refers to death at the hands of another,” Buck said.

The coroner added: “This matter remains under investigation by the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.”

Buck issued condolences to the family of Chambers, and her thoughts to the police department.

Original Story:

A man was fatally shot by a police officer on Sunday evening in Northampton Township, according to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.

The shooting occurred at 7:29 p.m. in the 500 block of Elm Avenue, a residential area adjacent to the Churchville Nature Center property.

The 40-year-old man who was shot was transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown Township, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The police activity reported by NewtownPANow.com and LevittownNow.com readers at the hospital in Middletown Township was connected to the shooting victim being transported there.

During the incident, a Northampton Township police officer sustained injuries and received treatment, the district attorney’s office said.

A report from 6abc indicated that the individual who was shot was reported to be armed with a knife at the time of his encounter with police.

“This office will make a determination on this shooting once the investigation is complete. Until that time, this office will have no further comment and will not release the names of any of the parties involved,” the district attorney’s office said.

The shooting call drew a large police response and officers from several municipalities were on the scene.

Elm Avenue was blocked with barricades until early Monday morning as county detectives processed the crime scene.
