Upper Makefield Township police said the traffic tie up along Eagle Road just past Wrightstown Road Wednesday morning was due to an incident involving a sick or injured raccoon.

Police said a school bus driver spotted a raccoon on the side of the road that was “struggling” and appeared to be injured or sick.

“For some reason, the driver decided not leave the raccoon, remained stopped in the road, which caused traffic to back up rather quickly. At some point, another bus driver provided assistance by picking up the raccoon with their bare hands and moving it further into the woods,” police said in a Facebook post.

Officers arrived on the scene and were unable to locate the raccoon.

“If you ever encounter an injured/sick raccoon, do NOT try to handle it,” police said along a photo warning the animals bite, scratch, and can get people sick.

The department joked that the Facebook post about the incident should serve as a late note for any students who arrived to classes after they started.
