A dispute over signage will come to a boil as the Borscht Belt Delicatessen prepares to appeal a township decision against its neon signs.

The Borscht Belt Delicatessen opened last spring in the Village at Newtown South shopping center on South Eagle Road.

Last year, township officials said the business violated the ordinance related to neon signs by hanging one without approval.

The deli’s owners will present their appeal to the Newtown Township Zoning Hearing Board at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 4 at 7 p.m. in the municipal building.

The appeal hearing follows a September decision by the township supervisors opposing the deli’s neon window sign, citing a violation of the code that prohibits neon signage.

“Please support us January 4th to save our Signs which are an important part of our Business and Jewish Culture! The Township has declared our Borscht Belt and Be a Mensch Signs Illegal and Against a 35 year old Code that says Neon Signs not allowed in Newtown,” the Borscht Belt Delicatessen posted on Facebook this week.

The Borscht Belt Delicatessen, known for its New York-style Jewish deli food, was originally launched in Stockton, New Jersey, in June 2021 by Nick Liberato and Mike Dalewitz.

The establishment moved to Newtown Township in the spring of 2023 with the mission to bring family-oriented, culturally rich, and authentic dining experiences that echo the nostalgia of the Borscht Belt era.

A second location of the deli recently opened at St. Mary Medical Center.

The founders have said they have ambitions for franchising and growth for The Borscht Belt Delicatessen.
