Police Announce Newtown-Area Traffic Impacts Possible Due To Planned Rally

Police are issuing an advisory for drivers in Newtown Township and Newtown Borough.

Ahead of a planned rally for Palestine and a possible counterprotest Wednesday evening in Newtown Township, police have issued an alert on possible road closures.

“Flood Newtown For Palestine,” a reported rally to “stand against genocide,” is planned for 5:30 p.m. in the Newtown Shopping Center on West Road, according to online event listings.

Below is the full Wednesday message from police:

The Newtown Police Department has been made aware of a planned march that is expected to travel through several roadways in our area this evening (Wednesday, January 17, 2024) from 530pm to approximately 730pm. During this event, several road closures will be put in effect to ensure for the safety of pedestrians and the motoring public.

Short term and sporadic road closures may take place along the following streets in Newtown Township and Newtown Borough beginning at approximately 5:30pm.;

  • Durham Road (Rt 413 to Sycamore)
  • Sycamore Street (Durham to Jefferson)
  • Jefferson Street (Sycamore to N. State)
  • State Street (Jefferson to Washington)
  • Washington Avenue (State to Sycamore)
  • Swamp Road (Sycamore to South Eagle)
  • South Eagle Road (Swamp to West)
  • West Road (S. Eagle to Durham)

The Newtown Police requests motorists to find alternate routes and avoid the area from 530pm-730pm to avoid delays and backups.
