The Newtown Township Police Department said goodbye to one of its most longest-serving members, Officer Renee Hurst, who retired on Thursday after more than three decades of service.

Hurst, whose career in law enforcement spans over 34 years, began her journey in 1986 after graduating from the police academy. She initially served as a police dispatcher for Bucks County from 1985 to 1990 and held positions as a police officer at the Chalfont Borough Police Department (1986-1987) and Yardley Borough Police Department (1987-1990) before joining the Newtown Township Police Department.

On October 18, 1990, then-Chief Martin Duffy welcomed Hurst to the Newtown Township Police Department as a part-time officer, and she transitioned to a full-time role on February 9, 1994.

Hurst’s tenure at Newtown Township was marked by her roles not only as an officer but also as a detective and a school resource officer.

Hurst’s impact was felt at Council Rock High School North where she served as the school resource officer.

“She established strong connections with many of the students as she taught and mentored them and encouraged them to turn to her with any questions or concerns,” the police department said.

The police department and the community have recognized Hurst’s contributions with numerous letters of appreciation and awards from various entities, including the Council Rock School District, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Pennsylvania Senate, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors, the Youth Aid Panel, and neighboring police agencies.

“Hurst was an exemplary member of this department. We thank her for her service and wish her a long and happy retirement!” the department said.
