Pennsylvanians are invited to help select the state’s 2025 River of the Year, a competition aimed at celebrating and raising awareness about local waterways.

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn announced that online voting is now open through Jan. 24.

This year’s nominees include the Delaware River, which is the longest undammed river in the Eastern U.S.; the Youghiogheny River, a popular spot for water recreation in the Laurel Highlands; and the Perkiomen Creek, which winds through Berks, Lehigh, and Montgomery counties.

“These three rivers are remarkable examples of Pennsylvania’s rich natural heritage,” said Dunn. “This competition not only highlights their unique qualities but also builds community pride and emphasizes their recreational, cultural, and economic importance. I can’t wait to see which waterway earns the 2025 title.”

The River of the Year contest that is administered by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR) and funded by the state focuses on the conservation needs and the environmental, recreational, and cultural value of Pennsylvania’s waterways.

Residents can cast their vote online at the POWR website, where each voter is allowed one vote per email address. The site also offers detailed information about each nominated river and the River of the Year program.

Janet Sweeney, of POWR, expressed excitement about the public participation in the contest.

“As we all continue to spend more time outdoors and deepen our appreciation for the beautiful natural resources of Pennsylvania, the annual River of the Year voting process is a fun way to rally behind and support your favorite waterway,” said Sweeney.

The winning river will not only earn the title of River of the Year but will also be celebrated with a $10,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The grant will fund a year-long series of events, including paddling trips and community activities, designed to promote environmental awareness and recreation. Additionally, a commemorative poster will be created to honor the 2025 River of the Year.
