Newtown Township Police Chief John Hearn reported a significant uptick in police assignments in 2024.
At a recent Newtown Township Board of Supervisors meeting, the chief said the department logged 27,234 service assignments through November, marking a substantial increase from the 23,250 assignments recorded in all of 2023.
“We’re actually up about 4,000 assignments for the year so far,” Hearn told the board. “And it doesn’t include December.”
Hearn attributed part of the increase in service calls to proactive policing efforts. He said there was no one factor that led to the increase.
“This also involves proactivity of our current police officers out on the street making checks, doing investigations that would normally not be done,” he explained. “They’re very proactive on their patrol efforts.”
Also recently, Hearn announced a preliminary grant award of $75,000 to offset the cost of a second school resource officer position for the department that covers Newtown Township and Wrightstown Township.
The chief credited the successful grant application to the work of staff member Amanda Pell and Officer Brandon Turpyn.
