The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors has given the green light for CAVA, a fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant chain, to open its first Bucks County location at the former Mod Pizza site.
The supervisors voted Wednesday evening to grant conditional use approval for CAVA to operate as both an eat-in and takeout establishment at 2938 South Eagle Road in the Village of Newtown shopping center.
“This is an application that would allow the substitution of a new restaurant for the same restaurant space that already exists that was formerly occupied by Mod Pizza that backs up to Durham Road,” the applicant’s representative explained during the meeting.
The conditional use resolution outlines 12 specific conditions the restaurant must adhere to, including operational aspects such as compliance with township engineering requirements, design approvals, and environmental considerations.
CAVA’s representative confirmed to the supervisors that all conditions are acceptable to the applicant.
CAVA will feature “significantly less seating” than its predecessor, according to the representative for the eatery.
Founded in 2006 by first-generation Greek Americans in Maryland, CAVA has seen rapid expansion across the country, boasting more than 360 locations.
The chain is known for its customizable Mediterranean bowls, wraps, and other menu items.
Several CAVA locations are already in the Philadelphia region, but the Newtown Township site will mark the chain’s debut in Bucks County.
MOD Pizza was evicted from the shopping center late last year amid financial struggles.
In 2018, CAVA acquired the remnants of the Zoës Kitchen chain, which previously had a location in Newtown Township.
