Guru’s Indian Cuisine has transitioned to a takeout-only operation, which is effective immediately, as the restaurant’s owners seek a more affordable location.
Owners Priya Trivedi and Chef Ashni “Baba” Kumar announced the change in a press release and a letter to customers of the Newtown Township business.
The couple recently regained ownership of the restaurant on North Sycamore Street from their nephew, Samarth Joshi, after returning from India with two daughters they had adopted.
“Despite our best efforts, the current market rates, the hurdles in refinancing, and the ongoing financial strain have made it impossible for us to secure the refinancing we needed in time,” the owners wrote in their letter.
They added that they had to “pick a battle” between their business and their newly-adopted daughters and chose their family.
“This is not goodbye. This is just a pause. A deep breath before we try again,” Trivedi said. “We hope to come back stronger, more stable, and find a new home for Guru’s soon.”
The restaurant at 203 North Sycamore Street has been in business for 10 years.
It is known for its traditional Indian dishes, as well as Indo-Chinese and Mexican fusions.
For now, the couple said they will continue to serve the community and offer warm meals to anyone in need.
The build was up for sale and then taken off the market as the couple navigated adopting their daughters.
