The Newtown Business Association (NBA) will usher in the season with the annual Newtown Holiday Parade this weekend.

On Sunday, Dec. 7, the parade will begin at noon and sponsored by the Newtown Athletic Club and other local businesses.

The full parade will march from Sycamore Street and Washington Street to Sycamore Street and Durham Road.

This year’s parade theme is “Classic Holiday Movies.”

Organizers are asking participants and spectators to dress as favorite characters, including Buddy the Elf, Kevin McCallister, or the Grinch. The NBA noted that participants should not dress as Santa, as the parade features the official arrival of Santa Claus at the end of the route.

Entertainment will include a performance of the National Anthem by recording artist Justin Guarini. The parade will also feature marching bands, majestic Belgian horses, carolers, dance troupes, a color guard, and appearances by local emergency responders.

Prior to the parade, families can visit Santa’s Village, which is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the corner of Silo and Sycamore streets. The village will host a petting zoo, face painting, hair-braiding, and stations for children to write letters to Santa while enjoying hot chocolate and treats.

The event, which the NBA press release called a “celebration of community spirit, festive cheer, and the shared joy of the holiday season,” will lead to road closures in the area.

State Street will be closed through Washington Avenue, and Sycamore Street will be closed from Washington down to the Green Parrot.

Spectators should plan to arrive early for the best viewing spots, organizers said.

While parking near the route will be first-come, first-serve, additional parking will be available at Council Rock North High School.

Parade registration for entrants is now closed, but volunteer opportunities are still available via the organization’s website.
