The Newtown area may awaken to a dusting of snow between late Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service expects the area to receive no more than an inch of snow, with final totals likely to remain below that mark. Higher accumulations are predicted for the Poconos where several inches could fall.
Despite the lack of predicted accumulation, meteorologists warned that timing could create tough driving conditions Tuesday morning.
“Not a major system for us, but be mindful of potential for slippery roads tomorrow morning,” forecasters from the National Weather Service’s regional office said Monday. “Consider delaying travel until the wintry precip has ended in your area.”
The expected snowfall arrives a week after several inches of snow covered the region.
While the ground may turn white Tuesday, it is unlikely to stay that way for the holiday.
The current forecast calls for a chance of rain on Christmas, and the National Weather Service regional office reports there is no forecast for a “White Christmas” this year.
The region has not seen a official White Christmas since 2002, when approximately 2 inches of snow fell. Historical records from nearby Trenton show much heavier holiday totals in the past, including 11 inches in 1966 and 10 inches in 1909.
Last year, the area saw a dusting of snow on Christmas Eve morning.
