Maintenance crews from PennDOT are shifting their focus from clearing state-owned roads to repairing deteriorating pavement and a growing number of potholes this week.

The repair push follows a period of weather characterized by a “rapid freeze-thaw cycle,” where temperatures fluctuate between freezing and mild, officials said.

According to PennDOT, the conditions are a primary driver of seasonal pothole development.

Drivers can expect periodic lane closures and potential traffic slowdowns on:

• Richboro Road, Newtown Bypass, Yardley-Newtown Road (Route 332) in Lower Makefield, Newtown, and Northampton townships

• Durham Road in Newtown, Wrightstown, and Buckingham townships

Crews will focus on patching efforts when they are not occupied with snow removal or salting operations.

The department stated that work will continue until all impact road surfaces are addressed.

Since Jan. 1, PennDOT District 6, which covers the Philadelphia region, has logged nearly 900 pothole-related complaints from residents.

Officials are urging drivers to reduce their speed in active work zones and avoid distracted driving to ensure the safety of motorists and PennDOT workers.

Residents can report potholes to the PennDOT Customer Care Center by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD or by visiting customercare.penndot.pa.gov.
