With the arrival of spring, PennDOT is calling on residents to grade its performance during a winter season that saw higher snowfall than in recent years.
The department launched an online survey this week to gather public feedback on how its crews and contractors managed snow and ice removal on state-owned highways and roads.
“I’m incredibly proud of how the PennDOT team met the mission across Pennsylvania this season, working around the clock to keep people and goods moving,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “The public’s input through this annual survey helps us review perceptions and knowledge of our operations, while we also look for public information opportunities.”
The 17-question survey, which takes approximately five minutes to complete, is available through April 14. All submissions are anonymous.
Participants are asked to weigh in on several key operational areas, including expectations for how quickly roads should be made safe and passable, ranking of priorities for snow-removal efforts, and general ratings of PennDOT’s winter performance.
The questionnaire also seeks to understand how drivers stay informed. It asks respondents where they receive roadway updates and how they utilize 511PA, the state’s traveler information service. During winter months, the 511PA website tracks PennDOT plow trucks in real-time and provides specialized roadway condition reports alongside standard traffic alerts.
The feedback comes after a demanding winter for state plow crews and contractors. Snowfall totals for the area were above 40 inches this winter, a sharp increase over the relatively mild accumulations recorded in the area over the last several years.
