Republican State Sen. John Rafferty of Montgomery County and former Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, were both the nominee of their respective parties Tuesday in the race for Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Shapiro, a lawyer but never a prosecutor, beat out former Democratic district attorneys Stephen Zappala and John Morganelli. Rafferty ended up besting Republican opponent Joe Peters.
The race for Pennsylvania Attorney General is hot due to the fact that current Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat, decided not to run again. Kane is currently criminally charged with leaking grand jury information. The northeastern Pennsylvania prosecutor’s time in office has been scandal-filled.
