A Newtown teenager has been cited for underage drinking following a crash early Thursday morning.

The one-car crash was reported in the early hours at the intersection of Steeplechase Drive and Lindenhurst Road in Lower Makefield Township, police said.

Lower Makefield Township police said in a news release that they responded to the scene at 4:20 a.m., approximately an hour after the crash had occurred.

Upon their arrival, officers found the vehicle owner, who was not the driver, at the scene. The owner reported that the driver had swerved the vehicle to avoid hitting a deer, police said.

After further investigation, the police summoned the driver – a 19-year-old man from Newtown – to the location.

It was determined that the young man was under the influence of alcohol at the time he returned to the scene of the crash, police said.

The Lower Makefield Township Police Department has cited the driver for underage drinking.
