The streets will come alive this Saturday as the Newtown Historic Market Day returns for its 48th year.

The event, which has been a staple of the community since the mid-1970s, will offer a slice of colonial America right in the heart of Newtown Borough on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festivities will take place around the historic Half-Moon Inn at Court Street and Centre Avenue.

Admission is free for the family-friendly event that showcases 80 artisans and craftspeople. The vendors not only sell their unique creations but also demonstrate the artistry that dates back to Newtown’s early days.

The event has evolved to include not only traditional crafts but also fine arts, specialty foods, and a farmer’s market.

Market Day pays homage to the time-honored tradition where local farmers and homesteaders brought their crops, livestock, and homemade goods to town, transforming the area into a bustling marketplace, according to organizers.

Festival-goers can expect a lively atmosphere filled with live music, food, and numerous colonial-era activities. Historic reenactments, puppet shows, candle making, hayrides, and more will provide entertainment for all ages.

The 2024 music lineup includes Bill Dooley performing at the Half-Moon Inn and the Dockside Band at the Callahan Research Center.

Newtown Borough police have announced road closures and parking restrictions for Market Day.

Starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday, the following streets will be closed:

  • Court Street between Penn Street and Washington Avenue
  • Centre Avenue between South Chancellor Street and South State Street
  • Mercer Street between South State Street and Congress Street
  • South Congress Street between Penn Street and Washington Avenue

There will also be no parking allowed on these streets starting from 6 a.m. to accommodate the event setup and ensure pedestrian safety, police said.

A rain date for the festivities is set for Sunday.
