Newtown Township Chief of Police John Hearn has issued a warning about a surge in fraud incidents, particularly those targeting elderly residents.

“Frauds are increasing, particularly on the elderly,” Hearn said recently at a Newtown Township Board of Supervisors meeting. “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”

The chief urged residents to be vigilant and take protective measures to safeguard their personal information and finances.

Hearn stated the importance of protecting one’s identity and advised residents to mail letters from inside the post office rather than using freestanding mailboxes.

He also called on community members to look out for vulnerable populations. “Pay attention to your parents, your grandparents and your elderly neighbours. They seem to be the most vulnerable for these types of solicitations,” Hearn said.

The police chief highlighted a new tactic employed by scammers, noting they are “now using artificial intelligence to describe their voices as their grandkids trying to get their money.”

In response to the rising threat, Hearn advised residents to be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true and to be wary of attempts to obtain personal information.
